Refrigerator Maintenance: 7 Tips to Make Your Fridge Last Longer

A little maintenance goes a long way. These 7 simple tips will help your refrigerator run efficiently, save energy, and last years longer — no tools required.

Why Refrigerator Maintenance Matters

A refrigerator is one of the most expensive appliances in your home, and it runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A little maintenance can add years to its life, lower your electric bill, and prevent the kind of breakdown that spoils a week's worth of groceries. Here are 7 things you can do — no tools required.

1. Clean the Condenser Coils

The condenser coils release heat from your refrigerator. If they are covered in dust and pet hair, the compressor has to work harder and runs hotter — which shortens its life. Pull the fridge out or remove the kick plate at the bottom, and use a vacuum or coil brush to clean the coils. Do this twice a year.

2. Check the Door Seals

A worn door seal lets cold air escape, which makes the compressor run constantly. Close the door on a dollar bill and pull it out — if there is no resistance, the seal is weak. Worn seals are inexpensive to replace and can make a big difference in efficiency.

3. Set the Right Temperature

Your refrigerator should be between 37 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit, and your freezer should be at 0 degrees. Setting the fridge colder than 37 does not make food safer — it just wastes energy and can freeze your produce. Use a cheap appliance thermometer to check.

4. Keep It Full (But Not Overcrowded)

A full fridge holds its temperature better than an empty one because the cold food acts as a thermal mass. But do not pack it so full that air cannot circulate — the cold air needs to reach every shelf. If your fridge is mostly empty, keep a few water bottles inside to help maintain the temperature.

5. Replace the Water Filter

If your refrigerator has a water dispenser or ice maker, replace the filter every 6 months. A clogged filter reduces water flow, affects ice quality, and can cause the ice maker to stop working. Write the date on the new filter so you know when to change it next.

6. Keep the Top Clear

Do not use the top of the refrigerator as a shelf. Papers, boxes, and small appliances on top block airflow and can make the compressor run hotter. Keep the top clear.

7. Listen for Unusual Noises

A refrigerator should hum quietly. If you hear clicking, buzzing, grinding, or a loud clunk, something may be wrong. Clicking can mean a failing start relay on the compressor. Grinding can mean a bad evaporator or condenser fan. If you hear these sounds, call for refrigerator repair before the compressor fails completely.

When to Repair vs Replace

If your refrigerator is more than 10 years old and the compressor has failed, replacement is usually the better choice. But if it is 5 to 8 years old and the problem is a fan, a defrost heater, or a door seal, repair is almost always worth it.
